A fresh take, really?
A feeling of Deja Vu hits us gently, while watching Wednesday, the scenes look very familiar and previously seen somewhere.
Most of the scenes and Nevermore Academy reminded us of the most famous magical movie of all time, Harry Potter. Nevermore Academy gives Hogwarts vibes.
The Poe cup race evoked memories of Harry Potter: Goblet of fire‘s Triwizard Tournament underwater race. The classroom scene where Xavier draws a spider and it comes to reality while Ms Thornhill was teaching made us remember the Harry Potter scene where Professor Mad eye moody frightened Ron Weasely and irked Hermoine in the classroom with the spider. Wednesday finally showing up in the beautiful black dress reminisced Hermione turning up in her pretty gown for the Yule ball.
The guys who pulled the red paint prank during the dance seemed to have taken a cue from Derry Girls (comedy series) season 2 episode 5, where Carrie pours pigs’ blood or tomato juice on the prom queen Jenny and others to take revenge.
All great memories rush in and it is our mind that starts drawing comparisons, prompting us to seek resemblance which is wonderful still Wednesday manages to make it look fresh, adding a goth charm with emotionally dead dialogues making the situation funny and tense at the same time and it would be unfair to say we didn’t enjoy every bit of it.
Edgar Allan Poe’s Influence
Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, very famous for his poems and stories. His gothic style of writing is an inspiration in the life of Wednesday Addams and he is a very important and praised figure throughout the series.
His famous work “The Raven” made him very successful and the last lines of that literary piece are :
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.” Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his chamber door, With such name as “Nevermore.” That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
and we can sense, it is how Nevermore Academy got its name, also in the series Wednesday Addams’ ancestor Goody Addams tells her that she is the Raven in their family.
A similar big statue of Poe as described in the last lines of The Raven is present on the Campus which is a secret door for the Nightshades Club library. That statue opens up the secret passage to the nightshade members or those who solve riddles and find an answer “SNAP TWICE”.
Edgar Allan Poe is a celebrated figure in the academy and to pay homage, Nevermore organises an annual Poe Cup race for the students. Poe’s influence is very deep and a true lover of his literary works can understand how his unique morbid style of imagination is embedded in the series.
Season 2 expectations
Season 2 of Wednesday is anticipated to be released next year but it is not confirmed yet, after 340 million hours watched, record-breaking debut of season 1, viewers are crazy about it.
As everybody at Nevermore is returning back home for the holidays, we can get to see student’s family life and their evolution of power. Wednesday’s psychic abilities will get stronger, Bianca will face her mother, Enid who finally turned into a werewolf will go through certain powerful changes, and others might experience a surge in their abilities too.
We can expect more chemistry between Wednesday, and Xavier as he gifted her a new phone which is a good sign they can finally be good friends. Wednesday has her first online stalker, we can get more tea about it in new episodes. The usual suspects who could be the stalker are Ms Thornhill, the evil normie plant teacher aka dorm mom(also Wednesday’s previous stalker), Tyler, Principal Weems or Uncle Fester. Well, it could be just her close friend Enid.
Season 2 will definitely have clear intentions for Tyler about Wednesday, their infatuating story might end. Also, Tyler can fully unleash his monster side or even his better side which will take us to a new ride as the previous antagonist Ms Thornhill who used to control Tyler is now not near him.
New Principal will get in charge of Nevermore. Principal Weems is expected to return for she was a shapeshifter, her death is actually something that can’t be digested easily. Ms Thornhill might return with a bigger agenda as Joseph Crackstone and Goody Addams are now just the ghosts of the past or we can get to see a new antagonist.
New episodes can bring more of The Addams Family, Wednesday’s parents or her siblings. As it has now become a family tradition to study at Nevermore, it is not wrong to expect Wednesday’s siblings at the Academy.
